Young axolotl Axl lives with his family in a moss-ball village at the bottom of a lake. Their home is threatened by falling trash, and axolotls blame messy crabs for their near extinction. Feeling unloved by his overworked dad, Axl runs away. While exploring, he befriends crab kids and ends up trapped in captivity. In danger, Axl begins to understand his dad’s struggles, while his dad learns to accept Axl for who he is. A garbage storm unites axolotls and crabs, sparking new friendships. Together, they launch the trash back into the sky, making their home safe again. But - for how long?
